Thick green turf maintained by Kaus Cuts โ€” the result of healthy, aerated soil

Core Lawn Aeration

Compacted soil chokes a lawn. Core aeration pulls plugs of soil out of the ground, opening channels for air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots โ€” the single biggest one-day win for most tired yards.

What's Included

  • Core (not spike) aeration with a commercial machine
  • Plugs left on the lawn to break down naturally
  • Optional overseeding combo
  • Recommendations on watering + mowing after

What Core Aeration Is โ€” and Why Your Lawn Needs It

Our clay-heavy soil compacts under foot traffic, mower passes, and time. Compacted soil can't hold air or absorb water โ€” so even with good fertilization, your grass stays thin and stressed. Core aeration pulls thousands of plugs of soil out of the ground, leaving channels that let air, water, and nutrients reach the root zone again. The plugs break down on top over a couple of weeks.

When to Aerate

Timing matters and depends on your grass type:

  • Warm-season grass (Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede) โ€” late spring through early summer, when the lawn is actively growing
  • Cool-season grass (Fescue) โ€” early fall is ideal; spring is okay

Aeration + Overseeding

For fescue lawns especially, aerating and overseeding in the same visit is the highest-leverage move of the year. The seed falls into the fresh holes โ€” protected from birds, in direct contact with soil โ€” and germinates at a much higher rate than seed broadcast over uncompacted ground.

What to Expect After

The plugs look messy for about 2 weeks โ€” that's normal and they break down on their own (don't rake them up; they're feeding your lawn). Water deeply twice a week for the first month. Hold off on mowing for about a week if you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I aerate?

Once a year for most lawns. High-traffic yards and heavy clay soils benefit from twice a year.

What's the difference between core and spike aeration?

Spike aeration just punches holes in the ground without removing soil โ€” which can actually worsen compaction around the holes. Core aeration removes plugs. It's the only kind worth paying for.

Should I aerate and overseed at the same time?

If you have fescue, yes โ€” best move of the year. For warm-season grass it's less common since they spread by runners; we'll recommend based on your lawn.

How long does the lawn take to recover?

Plugs break down in 2 weeks. Roots respond fast โ€” most yards visibly green up within a month, especially with good watering after.
